Doppelganger week lives on with iPhone app

Just when you thought it was over, the doppelganger trend is making a comeback.
Utilizing the format of an iPhone App, the Family Tree website MyHeritage.com has created yet another way for people to actually prove that they look like a celebrity. All you have to do is go to their website, download MyCeleb and upload a photo of yourself. The application â which is free for a limited time â will determine which celebrities you look like the most.
As lame as the concept sounds, the app is actually pretty fun. You get the option of taking a photograph of a friend or using a former photo of someone from your iPhone album. The application then scans the photograph and tells you which famous person you most closely resemble. You can then opt to share the comparison with a quick upload to Facebook or Twitter and annoy all your friends and followers with your apparent vanity.
The problem with MyCeleb is that its system is too fundamental. The celebrity matches vary greatly depending on which way the subjectâs head is titled and the angle of the camera because the application focuses more on facial structure than the personâs actual appearance.
This means that girls get matched up with male actors and guys could be told they look like models or Betty White. But the basic design adds to the appâs appeal â itâs embarrassing how easy it is to get caught up in photographing yourself in various positions to try to make MyCeleb match you up with a wide variety of celebrities.
MyCeleb gets boring after about 10 minutes and will soon fade into obscurity soon after being downloaded. But for a college-budget-friendly price of $0, itâs worth the fleeting thrill.
Now we just have to address the meaning behind our cultureâs budding obsession with doppelgangers and how we are all seeking validation by comparing our appearances with unattainable ideals of beautyâŚ
Nah, weâll save that for another day. Iâm going to go show my friends that I look exactly like Julia Roberts and Megan Fox.
